Giants Hire Former Chiefs OC Matt Nagy to Develop Jaxson Dart

The New York Giants have appointed Matt Nagy as their new offensive coordinator under newly hired head coach John Harbaugh, the franchise announced Tuesday. He brings a wealth of experience to the position after spending the last three seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator.

The 47-year-old played a crucial role in helping Patrick Mahomes and Co. win Super Bowl LVIII in 2023. NFL insider Adam Schefter broke the news on X.

“ESPN Sources: Giants are hiring former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their offensive coordinator,” Schefter wrote.

Nagy will be tasked with developing second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart and elevating a Giants team struggling to compete in the NFC East. John Harbaugh previously coached under Andy Reid in Philadelphia and revealed during his introductory press conference that he leaned on Reid for guidance after being fired in Baltimore. The Big Red’s message to Harbaugh was that Change can be good.

Now, Harbaugh circles back to Reid’s coaching tree, bringing in Matt Nagy as his offensive coordinator in New York. Under Nagy’s guidance from 2023-2025, the Chiefs won 32 games and maintained an offense that consistently ranked among the league’s best.

Matt Nagy’s NFL Coaching Career

Prior to his recent tenure with Kansas City, Nagy served as the head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018 to 2021, compiling a 34-31 regular-season record with two playoff appearances. He led Chicago to a 12-4 record and the NFC North championship, the team’s first division title since 2010, earning AP NFL Coach of the Year honors in his first season. The Bears had finished last place in the division for four consecutive years before Nagy’s arrival.

However, Nagy struggled to replicate that initial success. The Bears failed to record a winning season in any of their final three years, posting records of 8-8, 6-10, and 6-11 before being fired in January 2022 after the disappointing 6-11 campaign. The team went 0-2 in the playoffs during Nagy’s tenure, including a heartbreaking wild-card loss in 2020 when the Eagles blocked the game-winning field goal attempt.

Before becoming the Bears’ head coach, Nagy spent nine seasons under Andy Reid. He worked three seasons as a quarterbacks coach with the Philadelphia Eagles before joining Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. Nagy was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017.
