Joe Flacco returned to the Cincinnati Bengals on a one-year deal. The veteran quarterback didn’t mince words during his introductory press conference on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Despite a 2025 campaign that earned him his first career Pro Bowl selection, the 41-year-old was left frustrated by a free-agency cycle that saw no team offer him a starting role.
Flacco is entering his 19th NFL season. He was brutally honest about his belief that he belongs at the top of a depth chart.
“Believe me, I wish I was a guy somewhere. And I think teams are dumb for not having me be that guy,” Flacco told reporters. “Not being one of those guys to go sign somewhere, yeah, it pisses me off a little bit. But at the same time, I’m very happy to be here.”
The veteran QB found it hard to understand what the NFL teams were thinking. Flacco did not want to concern himself with their decision-making or with whether he was on their radar.
“Listen, maybe part of that does motivate me to still do what I’m doing. I probably do feel that way. I feel like I have unfinished business. That’s part of why I’m still here playing and doing all those things. Not being one of those guys to go sign somewhere, yeah, it pisses me off a little bit.”
Flacco admitted he could have played the waiting game to see if a starting job opened up later this summer. However, his gut feeling led him back to a locker room where he is already a veteran leader. As he put it, he is a football player first. While he may not be the starter on paper, he believes his presence ensures the Bengals can win no matter who is under center.

Joe Flacco’s Unfinished Business in Cincinnati
Flacco’s return to the Bengals follows a 2025 season where he was traded from Cleveland to handle Cincinnati’s offense after Joe Burrow’s season-ending injury. In his six starts for the Bengals, Flacco proved he still possesses an elite arm. He averaged 27.2 points per game and recorded the NFL’s single-game season high with 470 passing yards against the Chicago Bears.
He acknowledged that his pissed-off feelings acted as motivation. Flacco made it clear that his decision to return was driven by unfinished business and his respect for the Bengals’ organization.
The 2025 Pro Bowler’s contract is a one-year, $6 million base deal that can reach $9 million through incentives. He remains the primary backup for Joe Burrow, who is returning from turf toe surgery. Alongside the recently signed Josh Johnson (turning 40 in May), the Bengals now boast the oldest quarterback room in NFL history.
