The San Francisco 49ers signed quarterback Mac Jones as Brock Purdy’s backup after a disappointing 6-11 season. While the team threw a $265 million bag for the 2022 Mr. Irrelevant, Jones added depth to the 49ers QB room at a very reasonable price.
Jones inked a two-year, $7 million contract with the 49ers in March, as per Ian Rapoport. The deal includes $5 million in guaranteed money and has a max value of $11.5 million. The former first-round pick sweated it out in the 49ers’ offseason training sessions.
49ers beat writer Nick Wagoner shared some insights from the 49ers QB’s training routine in the offseason.
“Upon arrival in San Francisco, Jones went through an intensive course focused on fixing his fundamentals,” Wagoner wrote.

Wagoner added that offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak and quarterbacks coach Mick Lombardi watched Jones’ and other quarterbacks’ previous tapes to improve the 26-year-old’s footwork. Jones is enjoying the hard work and loves his practice sessions in San Francisco.
“He’s made it clear that he likes being coached hard and that he’s craved the challenge that Shanahan and his staff have put before him,” Wagoner wrote.
Jones has 49 career starts to his name in four years and seems like a great backup option. Sam Darnold made leaps in his career during and after his tenure with the 49ers, and Jimmy Garoppolo also revived his career in San Francisco. Jones would also aim to script his redemption story.
“My goal is to really just have great attempts like, you know, is the ball supposed to go there? And if it is, then let it fly and be committed to it,” Jones said during OTAs.
Brock Purdy missed two games due to injuries last season. The 49ers will be much confident with an experienced backup option if they encounter a similar situation. The team has parted ways with Brandon Allen and Joshua Dubbs, their backup quarterbacks for the 2024 NFL season.
